Scheduler slice tool

- What is the slice tool?

With the new scheduler comes a feature for slicing up brackets into customizable sizes - the slice tool! With this tool you can easily slice up your brackets into smaller blocks containing your chosen rounds of that specific bracket type.

- How does it work?

The slice tool is both efficient and easy to use. The process is really simple; select the brackets you wish to slice, hit the "slice" button at the bottom of the screen, choose which rounds you want to cut out of the base block and hit "slice it up". Now you have sliced your bracket!

Selecting the brackets:

To select blocks, you first need to make sure you are in edit mode, which will allow you to select and move around blocks in the schedule. To toggle this mode, you can either hit the edit button shown in the first image below, or hold cmd (MacOS) / ctrl (Windows) when clicking on a block. When in edit mode, the "edit" button is blue and the footer at the bottom is visible, as shown in the second image below.

Now when in edit mode, you can select blocks. To select a single block, all you have to do is click on it. To select mutliple blocks you hold the same key as before (cmd or ctrl) when you click the blocks. Holding the specified key when clicking an already selected block will deselect it.

- Which blocks can I slice?

Any bracket with rounds can be sliced. That includes but is not limited to; a single elimination bracket, with semifinals and finals for example, or a round robin with a number of rounds. Each of these indivdual types of sections/rounds can be sliced out of the main bracket into new blocks in the schedule.

An example of a bracket type which cannot be sliced is the placement type bracket, since it doesn't contain any rounds.

Note: If you try to slice a bracket which for any reason cannot be sliced, the slicing tool will tell you that no slices for that block is available. So don't worry about breaking anything!

If you happen to slice something you regret later, you can always go back to the base block. Read more about that later in the article.

Opening the slice tool and selecting the rounds:

If one or more blocks are selected, the "Slice" button will light up in the footer at bottom of the page. This indicates that you can now use the tool. Go ahead and click on this button.

A modal window will appear in the center of the screen with a selection menu. Here's where you can select which rounds you wish to slice out of the main block, which in this example are from a round robin type bracket.

Click on the select box to open up the drop-down menu.

Here you can either choose to select only specific rounds to slice out, or you can choose the "Select all" option to slice your bracket into all available pieces.

Note: The slicing options in the drop-down menu are all the different possible alternatives/rounds of that specific bracket. In other words, you might see the option "16th-final" even if you only have an 8th-final. Choosing options which don't apply to your specific bracket will not have any affect, so choosing "Select all" will only make the available slices for you.

When you have selected your rounds of choice, go ahead and click on the "Slice it up" button to start the slicing.

This will take just a moment, and the new blocks will appear in the schedule where the base block is/was. Each new slice will have a label on the block displaying what round it is, as well as having the usual information about the bracket. In the images below are what the schedule as well as the bracket view looks like after slicing a single elimination type bracket into all possible slices for that bracket.

Now that your new slices are in place, go ahead and click the "Save" button in the bottom left corner, which will also show how many changes were made to the schedule since the last save.

If you are unhappy with the result of the slicing you can in the bracket view click on "Merge all blocks" to merge all the slices of that bracket into the original block again. After this you can use the slice tool again as you wish. If you didn't slice the bracket enough the first time and still have the main block left, you can slice it up again, selecting the remaining rounds you missed the first time.

Remember to save the changes when you are happy with the slicing, otherwise the changes might be lost.

Good luck slicing!
