Nordic systems (Round Robin format)

General

Nordic system is a bracket where you compete in a round robin format until you have suffered two losses or until you have faced all possible opponents and the bracket is finished.

Winner

Winner is declared by “last man standing”. When there is a tie a winner is declared via tiebreaker.

Seed order

When the draw is made the seed order is from top to bottom in the edit seed list. This list is used when pairing matches in the rounds. The seed order is updated dynamically if any of the opponents gets a bye in the previous round. The player who got the bye was placed in top in the seed order.

Start

The player in the top of the seed order finds his/her first opponent down in the seed order. After a round is played previous opponents are no longer listed as future possible opponents and the “pairing” algorithm skips to the next opponent in the seed order.

The first and second round is set and everyone fights twice until two athletes have two losses

After round 2 Harley Quinn and Luke Skywalker have two losses and are eliminated.

The right to the “bye”

In case of an uneven number of players in a round, the player with the lowest number in the seed order is entitled to a bye. When they have “used” their right to bye they are now rotated up to the top of the seed order and a new player inherits “the right to the bye”

Bruce Lee gets the bye in round 4 because he has the lowest seed in the current order

There are two exceptions to the right to the bye:

  1. It is not possible to seed the other players unless you cancel the right to bye
  2. By cancelling the right to bye you can avoid a double bye

If the right to bye got cancelled for the player with the highest seed then the right shall pass to that player who is next in line and then come back to the person with the highest seed to the following round.

If you can not match players

If by using the method:

“The player in the top of the seed order finds his/her first opponent down in the seed order.”

If you fail to match all players with a new opponent the system will rearrange the order from the bottom up by “unlocking matches” and creating new possible match-ups but first and foremost respect “the right to the bye”

If the entire seed list is unsolvable the system will also insert a “double bye” while matching the matches that are still possible to make.

When there are no more matches left to match the bracket is finished and goes to results.
