How to configure Madison bracketing in Smoothcomp

Madison bracketing is a popular tournament format for smaller events where there are no set weight classes and the event manager instead pairs the athletes bases on their weigh-in weight. This is a popular method because it discourages "weight cutting" in young athletes.

We have two variations on how to configure this in Smoothcomp.

A. Brackets are created after the official weighin

B. Brackets are created some days before the official weigh in

A: Configure Smoothcomp for when bracket are created after the official weigh in

1. Create a class under entries and call it "Weight" (Madison bracketing) for example and under description add information that the divisions will be assigned after the weigh-in.

2. Change the class to a "weight class" instead of a normal class.

3. Click the value (named "open") and under weight limits add a range from 0-300 lbs for example.

4. When an athlete registers for this entry they will choose the other classes such as age, belt and then they will just add the open class.

5. The group with all athletes choosing this entry will look like this. Now its time to weigh them in!

6. Click the scale icon and add the weight of the athlete and then save. Continue to add weights for all athletes.

7. Now you will have a list if all weights entered and this list can be sorted from lowest to highest!

8. The last step is to move the athlete's you see fit to a new group (in our example we will move the 5 with the lowest weight). Check the box next to the athletes name and then click the move button.

In the move window, choose to create a new group (or move them in to an existing group)

Name the group accordingly and then press next.

In this step you can add a public note and also send them an email and/or a text message using or Message Center and let them know that they have been moved.

9. This is how the new group with those 5 athletes will look and you can now go ahead and create a bracket for this group.

Now go ahead and move the next batch and create new brackets.

B: Configure Smoothcomp for when bracket are created some days before the official weigh in

If you want your athletes to declare a weight when they register so you can create brackets based on this before the event then we have you covered for this also!

1. Add the Smoothcomp template called "Weight Ranges for Madison Bracketing (lbs and kilo)" that we have prepared.

It can be added when you create a new event from the Smoothcomp template section.

... or from entries by clicking add entry.

Add lbs (pounds) or kilos by highlighting the class you want.

2. This template has a range of weights both for lbs and kilos but the class will not create separate divisions based on the value (so everyone will end up in the same group)

Creates division is disabled.

3. When athletes register they will pick the weight that they declare they have.

3. When registrations are coming in you will have a list of athletes with a declared weight that you can sort and then move them to a new group (see above) and then create the brackets.

4. Once you have the official weighin and input their actual weight and its out of the declared weight the weighinbox will turn red and you can then take action on this and move them to another weight or let them stay in the assigned group.
